Carbohydrates include starches and sugars. A portion of the calories comes from carbohydrates. Foods high in carbohydrates furnish fewer calories than foods high in fat. But the body readily absorbs carbohydrates and therefore foods which contain them are quick sources of energy. That’s why eating a candy bar, which is largely sugar, gives one a refreshed and invigorated feeling!

The solid substance that makes the framework of fruits and vegetables is another form of carbohydrates and is known as fiber, bulk or roughage. This is not burned in the body to produce calories, but is eliminated through the intestinal tract. It is valuable because it promotes muscular action or peristalsis of the intestinal tract and thus prevents constipation.

Generous amount of vegetables and fruits should be eaten. The vitamins supplied by these foods are important in maintaining regular intestinal activity and balance of all the nutrients for your individual requirements.
